Valenciaport concentrates 34% of its traffic on the world’s two economic powers – the USA and China – 34% of its traffic

  • Data from the Statistical Bulletin of the Port Authority of València (PAV) show that China is once again the main trading partner of Valenciaport with 702,633 containers handled in 2024, followed by the USA with which 368,298 TEU’s have been exchanged. China and the United States were Valenciaport’s main trading partners in 2024, accounting for 34% of its traffic between them. China remains once again in first position with 702,633 containers handled in 2024 and 7,912,389 tonnes, followed by the USA with which 368,298 TEU’s and 4,524,697 tonnes have been exchanged.

The data of the Bulletin have been provided to the members of the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of València (PAV) this morning at its first meeting of the year held in the Clock Building where it has been explained that the main goods exported from the Valencian docks to China are food, cars and their parts, wines and beverages, construction materials, paper and chemicals. Valenciaport receives from the Asian continent: machinery and tools, construction materials, automobiles and their parts, chemical products, tobacco, cocoa, coffee and spices.

With the US, the predominant cargo traffics are construction materials, machinery and tools, food, wine and beverages, and chemicals. The products arriving from North America are paper, fresh products, chemicals and automobiles and their parts.

However, the countries that have increased their share of freight tonnage in 2024 the most are Saudi Arabia (+59.64%) and Ukraine (+44.02%). Other countries that have strengthened their ‘statistical visibility’ are Algeria and Turkey, with increases in their traffic (tonnes) of +24.88% and +23.73%. Also relevant were the increases with Israel +25.22%.

Annual balance

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of València has had access to this report which explains that the data of the Statistical Bulletin of the Port Authority of València (PAV) for 2024 shows that a total of 80,666,175 tonnes of goods have entered and left the Valencian docks, 5.11% more than in 2023.

The number of containers has also grown, reaching 5,475,773 TEU’s -containers of 6.1 metres in length- a figure that represents a growth of +14.15%: cargo traffic (export) has remained stable +0.13% and unloading (import) has grown by 10.60% and maritime transit +18.77%.

The Bulletin also breaks down the accumulated data for 2024 by sector of activity. The iron and steel and construction materials sectors have maintained similar management figures to those of 2023. The non-metallic minerals sector (+33.13%), fertilisers (+4.19), chemical products (+9%) and agricultural, livestock and foodstuffs (+2.48%) have increased their traffic. The energy sector fell (-40.41%).

Rail, Ro-Ro and passengers

With regard to rail transport, the number of containers transported by train fell by -3.26% and, if we take into account the total amount of goods that have entered and left the Valencian docks, the percentage that has been moved by rail is 6.67% of the total.

The Bulletin also shows that Valenciaport’s ro-ro traffic (maritime ro-ro services) was +3.44% higher than in 2023 in terms of tonnes and also in terms of containers, with +13.65%. The IULs (intermodal transport units) have grown by 4.46% in 2024. Likewise, a total of 579,401 cars entered and left the Valencian docks (-9.91%). In terms of passenger numbers, regular line passengers with the Balearic Islands and Algeria increased by +7.13%, with a total of 832,315 people entering and leaving València, while the number of cruise passengers fell by -0.92% (774,067 cruise passengers in 2024 compared to 781,280 in 2023).
