Upgrading of RUT’s berths

Riga Universal Terminal (RUT) has signed an agreement with the hydro-technical construction company BMGS for the re-construction of its two berths.

Berth ZO-1 will be extended southwards by 50 m up to 207 m in total. In addition, ZO-1’s water depth will be dredged to 10.25 m. Two mooring piles will be built here as well, along with installing new lighting.

Berth ZO-2 will be also extended – northwards by 96.8 m up to 260 m with the use of underwater sheet piling wall construction of 3,710 m2 of new berth area, while its water depth will be deepened to 12.0 m.

Moreover, a storm water sewer outlet system will be put in place.

“RUT’s shareholder – the company Portek – carried out extensive investments into reconstruction of berths in compliance with the company’s long-term development plans. We follow market developments in the Baltic region and we are aware of a great development potential. Therefore, we need to develop the company in order to remain competitive and meet customer requirements in the future as well. In order to optimize costs for transportation of cargo, the clients use bigger vessels. This trend applies to all cargo segments – both bulk cargo and containerized cargo and other general cargo. We have to grow up with the customer requirements and be able to accommodate larger vessels at appropriate berths,” Ricky Yong, RUT’s CEO, commented.
