Tecon Imbituba, a container terminal managed by Santos Brasil in Imbituba (SC), has been receiving ships initially destined for the Port of Navegantes, also located on the coast of Santa Catarina.
Navegantes had the access channel to the port closed due to the heavy rains that hit the region in recent days. There were 31 maneuvers planned and all were canceled due to bad weather.
Tecon Imbituba, which is located in a deep-water port, prepared to receive the largest ships in the world, without physical or navigation restrictions, carried out on Friday (6) the first extra operation: a vessel coming from Europe to initially planned for Navegantes. Last Monday (9), a vessel from Asia docked at the terminal – both handled approximately 2,200 TEUs (unit of measurement equivalent to a 20-foot container) each; and, on Wednesday (11), Tecon received a ship that operates in the Mediterranean service. On Thursday (12), a cabotage operation took place.
For Danilo Ramos, Commercial Director of Port Operations at Santos Brasil, due to its sheltered and strategic location with deep waters, infrastructure and large equipment, in addition to the quality of services provided, which is a hallmark of Santos Brasil, Tecom Imbituba has the capacity additional to meet extraordinary demands, minimizing the impact of rain on container and logistics operations in the region, as well as other force majeure events.
In the second quarter of this year, the terminal registered a movement of 14,614 containers – an increase of 9.7% compared to the same period last year, essentially driven by the growth in cabotage flow, which accounted for 93.8% of the total handled at the terminal. Long-haul flow represented 6.2% of the total operated in the quarter.
Santos Brasil also operates the General Cargo Terminal (TCG) in the port of Santa Catarina, which offers differentiated service and teams trained to move and store highly complex and value-added cargo. In addition to being located in a deep-water port, capable of operating 24 hours a day, the terminals have easy rail and road access.
