Strong start to 2025 for NWSA

The following release was published by NWSA:

Volumes up 25.4%, exceeding 5-year average for imports and exports The NWSA started the year with strong cargo growth as high vessel schedule reliability, consistent rail service, and new customers contributed to January volumes exceeding the 5-year average.

Full international imports increased 34.7%, the eleventh consecutive month of growth and 9.5% above the gateway’s five-year average for the month. The NWSA has successfully attracted new shippers to the gateway. Shippers also topped up inventories in advance of the Lunar New Year holiday and brought orders forward to avoid expected tariffs.

Full international exports increased 4.5% and were 5.7% above our five-year average. Strong demand for Washington state agricultural goods helped support solid volumes despite headwinds including strong currency exchange rates and tariff uncertainty. Total container volume (international and domestic) for the month reached 264,869 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), growing 25.4% compared to January 2024.

Domestic container volumes increased 5.5% compared to 2024. Alaska volumes increased 2.4%, and Hawaii volumes increased 24.6%.
