PSA starts work on $350m Jawaharlal Nehru expansion

Construction of the $350 million expansion project at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in India has got under way with terminal management firm PSA International having awarded the contract for preparatory work at its planned fourth container terminal.

Dredging and land reclamation work will be carried out by ITD Cementation India as part of a contract valued at $348 million. In total the public-private partnership expansion project will cost $1.3 billion and more than double TEU capacity of the existing three container facilities at JNPT.

Operated by DP World’s Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal, APMT’s Gateway Terminals India and port-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Container Terminal the existing termianls handle a combined 4.17 million TEU per eyar.

“PSA will work along with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust to develop this very important terminal in India to cater to the increasing demand for container handling capacity, and facilitate maritime trade in India,” a PSA spokesperson commented

Also known as Nhava Sheva, the seaport is the largest container port in India and last year Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT), a subsidiary of Singapore’s PSA won a 30-year concession to build and operate the new terminal.

The expansion project will develop three new container berths and the first phase is due to open in 2018. Covering a quay area of 1,000 metres with a 16.5 metre draught, the new facilities will be capable of accepting the latest generation of Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV).

The first phase of the new terminal will also feature 90 hectares of storage with capacity for 2.4 million TEU, serviced by 12 quay cranes. A second phase will double that to six berths, 2km of quay, 24 cranes and an annual capacity of 4.8 million TEUs.
