Port Tarragona regains the concession of the container terminal

The following release was published by Port of Tarragona:

The APT will put the terminal back on the market by opening a tender to concession this infrastructure and which will take into account the synergies with the Mediterranean Corridor, the intermodal terminal of La Boella and the "dry port" of Guadalajara Port Tarragona and DP World agree on an action plan to maintain services to customers The Port Authority of Tarragona (APT) will recover the concession of the Public Container Terminal currently operated by the company DP World. The APT has chosen to terminate the concession due to expiry in view of the fact that the operator of the container terminal has not achieved the objectives set in the terms of the concession. The Port of Tarragona is putting the terminal back on the market by opening, in the near future, a tender to concession this infrastructure with the aim of finding a new operator in the market that will contribute to achieving the objectives of diversification of traffic, increase in general cargo and enhancement of intermodality and rail transport that the Port wants to achieve in the coming years. The Port of Tarragona has recovered the concession of the terminal in order to take advantage of the opportunity represented by the commissioning of multiple logistic assets of the Port at the same time. That is why the APT wants to grant this concession to a new operator who is interested and able to create synergies between the container terminal, the ZAL, the Mediterranean Corridor, the intermodal terminal of La Boella and the "dry port" of Guadalajara - Marchamalo

Those responsible for DP World have announced that: "After more than 10 years operating in Tarragona, and motivated by current market circumstances, Dubai Port World (DP World) will cease operations in the current Public Container Terminal concession in the Port of Tarragona during the summer of 2023 to allow the Port Authority of Tarragona to reorganize the spaces and uses of the port land currently occupied by the DP World concession and thus adapt them to the current needs of the market". The APT will make it possible for the recovery of the terminal to affect as little as possible the normal operation of the port, in general, and the provision of terminal services, in particular.
