Port of Sohar expands container terminal

The Port of Sohar is expanding with four new post-panamax quay cranes for its Oman International Container Terminal (OICT).

The four cranes manufactured by ZPMC in China are now being unloaded at the port. The cranes will have the capacity to handle ultra-large container vessels of up to 20,000 teu.

The handling capacity at OICT has more than doubled over the last two years to 1.5m teu.

“As more lines from Asia start to make more direct calls to Sohar, and the size of those container vessels continues to increase, Sohar Port Authority is actively working together with OICT and our other terminals to increase efficiency and help reduce costs,” said Andre Toet, Sohar Port ceo.

The facility is jointly owned by Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) in Hong Kong, the Oman Government, C. Steinweg and other investors, and operated by OICT.
