PORT KLANG’S PERFORMANCE – 2016

1. Port Klang Authority is pleased to note that Port Klang registered a positive growth of 10.8% in 2016 in container handling compared to 2015 with a total of 13,169,577 TEU’s, Northport handled 3,223,544 TEU’s while Westports handled 9,946,033 TEU’s..

2. In terms of import container throughput, Port Klang handled 2,063,736 TEU’s,registering growth of 3.6 % compared to 2015’s performance – Northport handled 802,993 TEU’s while Westports handled 1,260,743 TEU’s in 2016. As for export throughput, Port Klang registered a growth of 3.9 %, handling 2,038,527 TEU’s compared to 2015; Northport handled 760,148 TEU’s and Westports handled 1,278,379 TEU’s..

3. Port Klang handled 9,067,314 TEU’s in terms of Transshipment throughput in 2016, registering a growth of 14.3 % compared to 2015; Northport handled 1,660,403 TEU’s and Westports handled 7,406,911 TEU’s.

The positive growth of Port Klang is attributed to several factors, mainly its efficient and productive terminal operators, strong support of Port Klang’s shipping and logistics community and the port’s supply driven port facilities as well as advanced state of the art cargo handling equipment. In addition, the strong cooperation and coordination between the Port Authority and the terminal operators in resolving operational issues has raised the confidence level of port users. It was also due to the resounding success of Port Klang’s continuous marketing and promotion strategies supporting the port expansion plans.

5. Northport and Westports have also adopted green technology in port operations embracing the government’s commitment towards enhancing environmental preservation and sustainable development of the port industry. Emission reduction and energy efficient technology is widely utilized in port vehicles and cargo equipment. Other initiatives include ship and domestic waste management system and the use of energy efficient lighting in the port areas. In recognition of these efforts, Port Klang was presented the Green Ports Award Scheme (GPAS) by APEC Port Services Network (APSN) in November 2016.

6. Based on the performance in 2015, Port Klang is forecast to be ranked 11th in the World Container League for 2016 moving up one spot from 12th in 2015. Nevertheless, given the challenges ahead in 2017, Port Klang will strive to meet the expectations of customers and stakeholders, continuously working towards providing better facilities and services at competitive rates.
