by Hristijan Ivanov

The following release was published by NWSA:

Increased vessel calls and intermodal volume coupled with diverted cargo led to strong container volumes in the gateway. August full international imports reached the highest level for the month of August since 2010, increasing 49.4% compared to August 2023. Full international exports increased 18.5% and surpassed the five-year average for the month. Total international volumes increased 45.6% compared with August 2023. August container volumes reached 315,739 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), growing 30.1%.

Year-to-date, volumes are up14.1% over last year to 2,137,902 TEUs, with full imports increasing 22.7% and full exports growing 14%.

Earlier this month, the 16,592 TEU Maersk Alette called at Husky Terminal in the Tacoma (South) Harbor—the largest container vessel to call at the harbor to date. The Maersk Alette is the first dual-fuel vessel capable of sailing on green methanol to call at our gateway.

Domestic container volumes declined 1% compared to YTD 2023. Alaska volumes increased 0.3%, and Hawaii volumes decreased 7.3%
