NWSA TEU Volumes Up 21% in May

Voyage consistency, increased vessel calls, and low import rail dwells continue to drive strong container volumes in the gateway. Full international exports continued a nine-month growth streak, increasing 20.8% over May 2023. Full international imports increased 32.5%, and total international volumes increased 30.5%. May container volumes reached 277,388 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), growing 20.6% over May 2023.

Year-to-date, volumes are up 8.2% to 1,235,446 TEUs over last year, with full imports increasing 12.5% and full exports growing 20.8%.

COSCO Shipping Lines and OOCL have launched a new China – West Coast North America service, which will call our Seattle (North) Harbor. The service — COSCO’s China Pacific Northwest Vancouver (CPV) and OOCL’s Pacific Northwest 5 (PNW5) — will operate with six 4,250 – 7,100 TEU vessels. The full rotation is Ningbo – Shanghai – Vancouver – Seattle – Lianyungang – Ningbo.

Domestic container volume is up 1.6% YTD 2024 compared to YTD 2023. Alaska volumes increased 4.7%, and Hawaii volumes decreased 12.6%.
