Shippers bringing orders forward to avoid expected tariffs continues to push strong volumes via the NWSA. Full international imports increased 27.9%, marking a full year of consecutive month-over-month growth and is 4.8% above the gateway’s five-year average for the month. Full international exports decreased 7.7%. Total container volume (international and domestic) for the month reached 257,705 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), growing 13.7% compared to February 2024. YTD volumes are up 19.3%, with full imports growing 31.3% and full exports declining 1.9%.

Carrier alliances reshuffled in February. In mid-March, the NWSA joined Husky Terminal and Hapag-Lloyd staff to welcome the Gemini Cooperation’s maiden call to the Tacoma (South) Harbor. The Gemini Cooperation, the new partnership between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk, delivers fast service to the NWSA with a commitment to schedule reliability. The WC4/TP5 transpacific service adds direct capacity between China, South Korea, Japan, and other markets via their dedicated feeder network.

Domestic container volumes increased 2.2% compared to YTD 2024. Alaska volumes increased 0.1%, and Hawaii volumes increased 12.8%.

Other cargo stats:

Total breakbulk volume decreased 40.2% for 46,985 metric tons YTD. High interest rates are having a significant impact on agricultural, mining, and construction equipment sales. Auto volumes were 40,271 units, down 33.7% YTD. Volumes reflect the slowing down of auto sales nationwide.
