The acquisition of the Hamburg Süd now forces Maersk Line to put its Brazilian Mercosul Line shipping company for sale.
Because Hamburg Süd already owns another Brazilian company, Maersk Line would, with the acquisition of the German shipping company, come to control too much of the market.
Alianca, owned by Hamburg Süd, together with and Mercosul Line, a carbotage and feeder operator, sit on almost 80 percent of capacity in the market on the routes they deploy, broken down to 59 percent Alianca and 21 percent Mercosul Line.
Brazilian competition authorities therefore demand that Maersk Line sell the smaller of the two companies, owning four 2,500 teu ships for sale, the Brazilian newspaper Valor Economico writes.
According to the newspaper, several of Maersk Line’s competitors are interested in buying Mercosul Line, including the partner in 2M alliance, MSC, as well as the German Hapag-Lloyd, the Japanese NYK, Cosco and the French CMA CGM.
Maersk Line confirms that Mercosul Line is to be sold, but refused to comment on buyer interest.
