Liverpool2 receives six ZPMC cranes

Peel Ports’ Liverpool2 terminal has received six of the 22 cantilever rail-mounted gantry (CRMG) cranes required at its completion.

The deep-water terminal, which was originally set to open in December 2015, received the first six of the 12 CRMG cranes needed for the first phase of its £300m (US$433m) development project from Chinese equipment manufacturer ZPMC.

As part of a £100m (US$144m) investment, the Port of Liverpool’s new deep-water facilities, which currently also have five ZPMC ship-to-shore (STS) cranes on site, will have a total of eight STS and 22 CRMG cranes once the project is completed.

According to a statement by the company, the first phase of the new terminal will be fully operational in the autumn of 2016, with marine trials “due to start shortly and other elements of the semi-automated terminal coming online throughout Q2 of 2016”.

The new CRMG cranes, which feature semi-automated control linked to the port’s Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS), are able to perform an average of 20 moves per hour.

The units have a 40 tonne under-spreader capacity and a maximum container lift height above quay level of 21 m under spreader (6+1 containers).

Peel Ports’ CEO Mark Whitworth said in a statement: “The arrival of this first consignment is yet another important milestone as we approach the opening.”
