The new terminal will be located in Matadi, the chief sea port in Congo
MANILA, Philippines — Port magnate Enrique Razon Jr’s International Container Terminal Services, Incorporated (ICTSI) will open its new terminal in Democratic Republic of the Congo in August this year.
ICTSI said in a statement that the new terminal will be located in Matadi on the Congo River, Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as deliver purpose-designed container handling capacity coupled with modern general cargo handling and storage facilities.
Matadi is the chief sea port of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the capital of the Kongo-Central province.
The port serves an extensive hinterland including the capital city of Kinshasa — which is the largest city in Central Africa.
ICTSI’s Congo terminal will initially start operations in August 2016 with one berth.
By November this year, the terminal is seen to have two berths with a total quay line of 350 meters.
Its container handling capacity will be 175,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) with a 9-hectare terminal area.
“We are very pleased to be progressing this $100-million investment on schedule in Matadi,” ICTSI Senior Vice President for Europe, Middle East, and Africa regions Hans-Ole Madsen said.
“The works are going well and we are very confident that we will be able to meet current and future cargo handling requirements for the Democratic Republic of the Congo in both the container and general cargo handling sectors,” Madsen added.
Its new Congo terminal is a joint venture between, ICTSI, The Ledya Group and SCTP, SA. ICTSI operates 29 terminals in 20 countries, managing and operating gateway container terminals of different sizes.
