As a higher base effect started to kick in, throughput at the port of Hong Kong slowed dramatically in June, with overall volumes almost flat at 1.66m TEUs and rising by just a couple of tens of thousands of containers from the month before.
The main container terminals at the Kwai Tsing complex saw volumes rise 4% to 1.32m teu from 1.27m teu previously but the non-Kwai Tsing terminals saw volumes plunge 12% to 340,000 teu from 387,000 teu in the previous corresponding period.
