Evergreen Group founder’s will shows Chang Kuo-wei as successor

EVERGREEN Group founder Chang Yung-fa, who died in January, chose his fourth son, Eva Airways chairman Chang Kuo-wei, to succeed him as group chairman.

In a statement, Evergreen Group said that Dr Chang made the stipulation in a will in December 2014. “In accordance with the will, Mr Chang Kuo-wei announced his promotion to the position of Evergreen Group chairman.” Local Taiwanese media reported Mr Chang Kuo-wei’s announcement on Friday.

“However, negotiations among all of Dr Chang’s sons are continuing to ensure that the Evergreen Group and all of its affiliated companies will maintain stable and sustainable operations, based on the principles and best practices of corporate governance,” the Evergreen statement said. The Evergreen Line is Asia’s biggest container shipping company.

Evergreen Group said it will provide more information when negotiations are finalised.

Evergreen’s founder, Dr Chang, who died at the age of 88, was one of the pioneers of container shipping. Succession questions have hounded Evergreen since the death of the diversified group’s founder.

Among Dr Chang’s sons, only the youngest, Chang Kuo-wei, is involved in their late father’s business empire, as chairman of Eva Air and Evergreen group vice-chairman. However, his brother Chang Kuo-Cheng, who was chairman of Evergreen Marine some years ago, is said to have made a low-key return a few months ago.
