Evergreen feud takes off as Chang Kuo-wei removed as EVA Airways chairman

The succession war at Evergreen Group continues to escalate as Chang Kuo-wei, the youngest son of the late Evergreen chairman Chang Yung-fa, was removed from the chairman post of EVA Airways on Friday in an ad-hoc board of directors meeting of Evergreen Group.

Evergreen Group terminated the top management layer of the group along with the chairman role, after Chang Kuo-wei had declared he was taking over as chairman of the group in February.

Chang Kuo-wei has been replace by Steve Lin, an executive director of Evergreen Group.

“In light of ongoing disputes, the board has decided to return management control of EVA Air to an industry expert,” Lin said in an announcement.

Chang Kuo-wei released a statement through his lawyer calling the move to remove his post as unlawful, claiming that the board meeting process went against previous interpretations by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Chang also said that it is extremely regrettable that the executors of his father’s will and other heirs had gone against the wishes of the late Chang Yung-fa, who passed away on January 20.

When contacted by Splash, an official at Evergreen Group said the succession matter needs to be resolved by the Chang family and declined to make further comment.
