The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has extended the deadline for expressions of interest in the pre-qualification stage to build and operate an expanded terminal in Colombo.
The deadline for interest in the East Container Terminal has been extended until 21 August 2016, according to local media.
The original deadline was 21 July and the country’s ports minister said that about 25 potential investors had collected tender documents by then.
The terminal is currently 440 m long, with a 18 m deep quay, a 20 ha yard and supporting facilities developed by the SLPA.
The concessionaire will have the advantage of utilising current container handling equipment and operating the existing facility while developing the rest of the terminal.
The SLPA anticipates that the concessionaire will commence operations at ECT “in the shortest possible time and develop it into a fully fledged terminal facility”.
The successful bidder will need to have market access to acquire additional transhipment container volumes, apart from handling organic volume growth and ECT will be managed and operated as a common-user/open access terminal.
