One defining feature of the history of containerisation has been the way it has led to the death of many inner-city working ports.
The latest example is on the west coast of South America, where authorities in Chile recently gave the go-ahead for the port of San Antonio to embark on its highly ambitious $4.45bn outer port development (El Puerto Exterior), in what promises to be the country’s largest ever port development..
