Aqaba Container Terminal celebrates year of progress

Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) achieved several important milestones adding to its track record of success in 2016, making noteworthy achievements in terms of operational productivity and business development.

On an operational level, total container throughput reached 791,860 teu in 2016, a 4.6% increase when compared to figures from 2015. Fully loaded container exports hit a new high of 119,000 teu, an increase of 6.9% over the year before. The terminal also handled vessels of over 9500 teu in size, compared with a maximum of 6500 teu in previous years.

ACT in 2016 also secured ISO 14001:2015 certification for its environmental management systems. ACT is the only company operating in Jordan to have received the 2015 version of ISO 14001 to date.

ACT is a joint venture between the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) and APM Terminals, operating via a 25-year build-operate-transfer agreement signed in 2006. The terminal is part of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), and provides a gateway to the region, including both Jordan and Iraq, as well as neighbouring countries.
