APMT orders remote-controlled cranes for Tanger-Med

APM Terminals (APMT) has ordered 12 new remote-controlled ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and 32 automated rail-mounted gantry (ARMG) cranes for its new facility at Tanger-Med II port, Morocco.

The equipment will be operated at the 5m teu APMT MedPort Tangier facility, which is now under construction and expected to be completed in 2019.

Both the new STS cranes, manufactured by Shanghai-based ZPMC, and the new ARMGs, made by Austrian-based Künz, will be delivered at the end of 2017.

The STSs are fully automated, with a remote crane operator located in an office near the quay, and feature a second trolley and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology.

The ARMGs will be deployed in 16 container yard blocks, with two units operating in each of them.

The new deep-water terminal, which will be the second operated by APMT at the Tanger-Med port complex, will feature both conventional and fully-automated operations as well as a truck gate system.

The facility, which will be equipped with up to 2,000 m of quay length, will be able to operate the newest ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) of up to 20,000 teu.

Dennis Olesen, APMT MedPort Tangier’s managing director, said: “Our goal is to use proven technology to create high-productivity for our clients on one of the world’s most strategically important trade lanes on the Strait of Gibraltar.”
