The planned opening date of APM Terminals new Costa Rican terminal has been pushed back to June 2018.
According to the Costa Rican Times, there are three problems delaying the opening, which will take longer to fix than planned when they were first encountered in April 2017.
The first problem relates to a group of piles of the new platform which have tilted irregularly.
The second problem is related to damages in 20 m of the breakwater.
The final reason is a lack of compaction of the surface of the 40 ha island.
The US$1bn project is divided into three phases, with the first one worth a total of US$297m and including the construction of two berths.
Once completed, the new docks will reportedly be able to receive calls from vessels over three times bigger than those the current docks are able to handle.
In 2011, APMT won an international public bid and signed a 33-year concession contract with the government of Costa Rica for the design, construction and operation of the specialised container terminal.
