PSA Antwerp’s Noordzee Terminal and MSC PSA European Terminal (MPET) have received two quay cranes each with two more on the way to each facility in May.
The machines have a hoisting height of 50 m and can reach across 25 rows of containers, making them capable of handling the world’s largest containerships.
These dual hoist cranes can handle two 40-foot containers or four 20-foot containers with each lift.
Preparation for the unloading of the cranes has commenced and all the cranes are expected to be operational by May 2017.
A second batch of the same type of cranes is expected to be delivered to Antwerp in May – two each for the Noordzee Terminal and MPET.
The new cranes for Noordzee Terminal form part of an overall upgrading program to make the facility fully equipped to meet the needs of shipping alliances and handle multiple mega-vessels simultaneously.
Quay deepening works that were completed last year while construction works will start shortly to extend the quay wall by an additional 140 m.
Once the four new cranes are installed at MPET, the terminal’s relocation and upgrading project will come to completion, providing the terminal, which is the second largest container terminal in Europe, with 41 quay cranes.
MPET acts as a key regional hub for the 2M alliance, aiming to offer high turnaround times.
