Algeciras to build third box terminal

In Spain, Algeciras Bay Port Authority has issued a tender for the construction and operation of its third container terminal. Interested parties have until November 30 to present bids.

The concession, which will be for 50 years, will almost certainly involve a high degree of automation, since this is one area particularly emphasised in the tender.

The new terminal will occupy an area of 30.5 hectares on the southern most tip of Isla Verde Exterior. It will have 680 metres of new berthing line and incorporate a further 130 metres of new build, giving a total of 810 metres. Alongside draft of 18.5 metres will allow it to accommodate neo-panamax vessels.

Total Terminal International, itself a semi-automated facility, already occupies part of the Isla Verde development at Algeciras, while APM Terminals also provides Maersk with its main hub in Spain.

In the first half of this year, Algeciras reported container traffic of 2.3m teu, up 13%.
