Aden Port Poised to Receive Containers and Other Cargo

Yemeni Port of Aden is fully ready to receive containers and other cargo traffic as a result of the stabilization of security in the region, Yemen Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation said on March 17.

During 2015 and 2016, Aden Container Terminal has been receiving all containers that could not reach other Yemeni ports because of military conflicts. The terminal has increased its storage space to receive more containers.

After the abolition of all checkpoints that had been developed after the war to cover all the liberated areas, the terminal was able to handle about 270,000 TEUs in 2016.

Aden Container Terminal has agreed with the World Food Program to provide special warehouses to store relief items and is able to make such arrangements with other relief organizations as required.

Other cargoes that are transported by general cargo and bulk ships are handled in Ma’alla Wharf.

“The … ability of Aden Port to receive all types of ships … makes it the only port that can meet the needs of the state in the next phase as it has the storage space and operational capacity to accommodate all Yemen’s trade and the relief and construction activities required in the next phase of national development,” Yemen Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation pointed out.

In April 2015, the port resumed bunker supply operations following a year-long suspension of activities amid a civil war that resulted in the freeze of bunker supply in March that year.

Yemen shut down all major ports in late March 2015 amid bomb strikes launched by the Saudi Arabia, targeting positions of Houthi militias, a rebel force believed to be backed by Iran.

In late 2015, the country’s government was in talks with Dubai-based port and terminal operator DP World on potential investments in the renovation of transport infrastructure damaged by the conflict.
