Adani’s Ennore terminal to open by mid-June

Adani Group’s new INR 1,270 crore (US$197m) container terminal at Ennore Port (also known as Kamarajar Port) is set to start operations within a month, the port’s chairman and managing director told local media.

The terminal, which will have an annual handling capacity of 1.4m teu with a 730 m quay at its completion, will provide a new option for cargo near the Port of Chennai.

The first phase of the terminal will have the capacity to handle 0.8m teu annually with a quay length of 400 m.

Adani signed a concession agreement with Kamarajar Port Ltd for the two-phased construction of a container terminal at Ennore, 24 km north of Chennai Port, in March 2014.

M. A. Bhaskarachar told local media that the new facility was set up as part of an expansion project to increase the port’s total capacity to 86m tonnes.

The project also included the construction of a new multi-cargo terminal, which is expected to start operations soon, with Chettinad International Bulk Terminal Pvt Ltd.

The port is currently a multi-cargo facility and handles mainly coal, liquid cargo and automobiles.

Bhaskarachar told local media that the port expects to report income growth in the 2016-2017 fiscal year, going up to Rs 681 crore (US$1bn) from the Rs 617 crore (US$96.2m) recorded in the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
