Adani to begin Ennore operations

Adani Ports will begin operations at the start of 2017 at its new container terminal at Ennore Port (also known as Kamarajar Port), offering a new option for cargo near the Port of Chennai.

An official from the terminal operator told Indian newspaper The Hindu: “95% of infrastructure work has been completed. Work relating to small accessories and installation of entry and exit gates, parking yard and railway platform terminal is going on.

“These are expected to be completed within a month. However, operations will commence after December.”

Adani Ports previously won a concession from Kamarajar Port Ltd to build a container terminal at Ennore, 24 km north of Chennai Port.

Currently, the port is a multi-cargo facility, handling mainly coal, liquid cargo and automobiles.

The first phase will have the capacity to handle 0.8m teu annually with a quay length of 400 m. The terminal’s full installed annual capacity will be 1.4m teu with a quay length of 730 m.

Investment in the first phase totalled Rs. 700 crore (US$105m) while the second will be worth an additional R. 570 crore (US$85m).

Adani Ports already operates the nearby Kattupalli Port, which it promotes as a “congestion free port” in contrast to Chennai.
