Q1 2025 was always expected to be tumultuous, with 2M and THEA alliances phasing out and Premier and Gemini phasing in. Add in Chinese New Year, continued uncertainty around the Red Sea passage, threatened and actual strikes in North America, and US tariffs, and you have a potent cocktail.
In evidence, global reliability therefore did continue its moderate decline - although with a small improvement in March 2025. There is still some gap down to the all-time low of 7.7 days average delay seen in Jan/Feb 2022 - but the on-time percentage comes dangerously close at 27% in 2025 Q1 vs 22% in December 2021.
Gemini have committed to a 90% reliability once fully phased in. Their reliability since the kick-off on Feb 1 does pull the overall numbers up. More about that in our alliance release in a few days.
The possibility that we’ll see global reliability make a slow recovery with the completed rollout of Gemini Cooperation and Premier Alliance can not be dismissed. However, any improvement brought about by these new networks will be strongly tempered with the challenges faced by sweeping tariffs and political upheavals.
