12 Companies in the Race for Mombasa’s Container Terminal

Twelve companies out of nineteen have been shortlisted by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) for the operation of the second container terminal at the Mombasa port.

Companies that will now submit their bids include major global port operators such as China Merchant Holdings, APM Terminals BV, DP World Ltd and Cosco Pacific Ltd. that teamed up with a local company, Kenya’s the Standard Media writes.

KPA invited companies to apply for the 25-year concession in December 2014.

The container terminal is going to have a capacity of 450,000 twenty-foot equivalents (TEUs) and is expected to be ready by March 2016.

KPA told the newspapers that the construction is progressing well ahead schedule and may be completed earlier rendering it operational by November this year.

The first stage of the construction of the USD 300 million terminal will comprise two berths.
